About Silantes: Biotechnology in Munich
We are a biotech company that produces and distributes biomolecules that are labeled with the stable isotopes 2H, 13C and 15N.
Our core competence, the fermentation of microorganisms in closed systems, distinguishes us from competitor technologies that are mostly chemical in nature. In a novel, purely biotechnology-based approach, we convert simple, inorganic stable isotope labeled molecules into complex organic molecules such as amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleotides, RNA and DNA.
The metabolic labeling of biomolecules with stable isotopes sets us apart from chemical production methods in terms of both quality and cost efficiency.
Our vision is to further broaden the applications for stable isotope labeled biomolecules.
The story behind Silantes technology
The technology is based on the fact that chemolithoautotrophic bacteria can metabolize inorganic carbon in a pathway similar to that of green plants. Chemolithoautotrophic bacteria combine the advantage of green plants in being able to assimilate CO2 with the advantage that bacteria are more productive and are also capable of expressing heterologous proteins.
The labeled chemolithoautotrophic bacteria cells are used as factory to produce the stable isotope labeled biomolecules of choice. This pioneering technology provides an outstanding homogeneity of components labeled with stable isotopes, especially for triple labeled (2H, 13C and 15N) biomolecules.
The roots of Silantes
The technology was developed by Dr. Hermann Heumann at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in 1998. Silantes, a spin-off of this renowned academic institute, employs highly skilled scientists in the fields of molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology.
